Lip balm and dry lips
Lips have almost no sebaceous glands and a very thin outer layer. They cannot hold water the way the rest of the face does — which is the whole story.
What to look for
Occlusives
Waxes and butters that seal. This is the part that actually stops water leaving.
Something that holds water
An emollient or humectant under the seal, so there is water to keep.
Low fragrance and no menthol tingle
A cooling or tingling balm is irritating the lip. It feels like it is working; it is doing the opposite.
Is lip balm addictive
Not in any pharmacological sense. What does happen: an irritating balm — menthol, camphor, strong flavour — keeps the lip mildly inflamed, so it keeps feeling dry, so you keep reapplying. Switch to a plain occlusive balm for a week and the cycle breaks.
When it is not just dryness
Cracking at the corners of the mouth, persistent scaling that does not respond to a plain balm, or a sore that does not heal are worth a doctor rather than another product. Habitual lip licking will also defeat any balm you buy.
