Nail fungus or damage: how to tell
A discoloured nail after gel removal and a fungal infection can look alike to a client. They are not alike, and the difference decides what you should do next.
What usually points to damage
It appeared after removal
White, chalky patches right after a soak-off are usually dehydration and surface damage.
It grows out
Damage moves up the plate with growth and does not spread sideways.
The nail is still attached
Damage thins and dulls the plate; it does not lift it from the bed.
What should make you stop
Yellow-brown discolouration
Especially starting at the free edge or the side and moving towards the base.
Thickening and crumbling
A plate that has become thick, brittle or crumbly at the edge.
Separation, smell, pain
The nail lifting from the bed, odour, or pain around it.
What to do
Do not treat it and do not cover it. A cosmetic product cannot cure a fungal infection, and sealing it under gel makes both diagnosis and treatment harder. Refer the client to a doctor; a diagnosis usually needs a sample, not a look.
In the salon, the priority then shifts to your instruments. Clean and disinfect properly — see instrument hygiene — because this is exactly the situation the routine exists for.
