Acne: causes, types and care without the myths
Acne is a condition of the hair follicle and its sebaceous gland. Almost everything people believe about it — chocolate, dirt, washing harder — describes something else.
What is actually happening
A follicle produces sebum and sheds cells. When shedding and sebum production get out of step, the follicle blocks. The blocked follicle is a comedone; when the bacteria normally living there multiply in it and the surrounding tissue inflames, it becomes a papule or a pustule. Hormones drive sebum production, which is why acne tracks puberty, cycles and stress rather than diet.
The myths worth dropping
„It is dirt“
Acne is not a hygiene failure. Washing harder strips the barrier and usually makes things worse.
„Dry it out“
Aggressive drying triggers more sebum, not less. Skin can be oily and dehydrated at once.
„Skip moisturiser“
A damaged barrier is more reactive, not less oily. Light, non-comedogenic care helps.
What cosmetic care can do
Gentle cleansing twice a day, light hydration, and leaving the skin alone between times. That is the honest scope of cosmetics here. Moderate and severe acne, and anything that scars, belongs with a dermatologist — there are prescription treatments that work, and delaying them costs skin.
We say this rather than sell you a cream for it, because a cosmetic product that claims to treat acne is making a medicinal claim it cannot support.
