Bakuchiol vs retinol
Bakuchiol is sold as a natural retinol. The comparison is fair about outcomes and wrong about chemistry — and the difference matters when you choose.
They are not the same molecule
Retinol is a retinoid — a vitamin A derivative with a long body of evidence behind it. Bakuchiol is a plant-derived compound with a completely different structure. Published comparisons have reported similar outcomes on skin appearance, which is where the nickname comes from, but the mechanism and the regulatory position are not the same.
Why people switch
Tolerance
Bakuchiol is generally better tolerated. Retinol irritation — flaking, stinging, redness in the first weeks — is the usual reason routines get abandoned.
No retinoid restrictions
Retinoids carry usage restrictions, including in pregnancy. Bakuchiol does not sit in that category.
Plant-derived
For a vegan or naturally-positioned range, it is simply a better fit.
How to use either of them
Evening application, on clean skin, consistently, for at least eight to twelve weeks before judging. Daytime sun protection matters with any active that works on cell turnover. And if you are using a retinoid prescribed by a doctor, do not layer something else on top without asking them first.
