How to tell a good bath salt
Bath salt is a simple product. That is exactly why the differences between a good one and a decorative one are easy to check — if you know where to look.
The checklist
Which salt is it
Magnesium salt, sea salt and Epsom salt are different substances. A label that just says „bath salt“ is avoiding the question.
Where the salt sits in the INCI
Ingredients are listed by descending quantity. If salt is not near the top, you are buying something else.
How much fragrance
Heavy fragrance is the cheapest way to make a cheap salt feel expensive — and the most common cause of irritation.
Does it dissolve
Grit left in the bath means the grain was chosen for the look of the jar.
Colourants
A colourant does nothing for the skin. That is fine, as long as you know that is what you are paying for.
Packaging that closes
Salt draws moisture. A bag that will not reseal turns into a block.
What a salt bath actually does
A warm bath relaxes muscles and helps you wind down, and salt changes the feel of the water on the skin. Claims that magnesium is meaningfully absorbed through the skin are contested in the scientific literature, and we do not make them. You do not need them to justify a bath.
