Lilial: the ban, and how to check a label
Lilial was in an enormous number of fragranced products before it was prohibited in EU cosmetics. Checking whether something still contains it takes about ten seconds.
What it was and what happened
Lilial — INCI name Butylphenyl Methylpropional, also written BMHCA — was a synthetic fragrance ingredient with a lily-of-the-valley character, used across perfumes, creams, shampoos and detergents. It was classified as toxic for reproduction and subsequently prohibited in cosmetic products in the EU.
How to check a product
Look for the INCI name
„Butylphenyl Methylpropional“. It will not say Lilial.
Check old stock
The ban applies to placing products on the market. Something bought years ago may still contain it.
Fragrance is where it hides
If a product is perfumed and the list is long, read to the end.
