TPO in nail cosmetics: the EU ban and what it means
Since 1 September 2025, TPO is prohibited in cosmetic products in the EU. If you sell or use gel polish, this is the one regulatory change worth understanding properly.
What TPO is and why it was used
TPO — trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide — is a photoinitiator. It starts the polymerisation reaction when gel polish is cured under a UV or LED lamp, which is what makes the layer harden quickly and evenly. It was widely used for exactly that reason.
How to check a product yourself
Read the INCI list
TPO appears as Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, or as Ethyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phenylphosphinate for the related form.
Check the batch, not the brand
A brand can reformulate. What matters is the product in front of you and the label on it.
Ask for the documentation
A supplier who cannot produce a written statement is telling you something.
Where Amoené stands
According to our production documentation, our products never contained TPO or its alternative forms. We did not have to reformulate for the ban, because there was nothing to reformulate. The formal declaration, signed by our managing director, is on the TPO statement page.
If you need it for your own compliance file, write to marketing@amoene.cz and we will send a signed copy.
