Dry and cracked hands: rebuilding the barrier
The outer layer of skin is a wall of cells held together with lipids. Everything that makes hands crack comes down to removing that mortar faster than the body replaces it.
Washing and disinfecting are not the same problem
Detergents dissolve barrier lipids — that is how they remove grease, and they do not distinguish between the grease on your hands and the grease in them. Alcohol-based disinfection is, perhaps counter-intuitively, gentler on the barrier than repeated washing, which is why professional hygiene guidance often prefers it between clients.
The damaging pattern is doing both many times a day and replacing nothing.
How repair actually works
Water first, seal second
Apply to damp skin, then something occlusive on top. Sealing dry skin just seals it dry.
Give it two weeks
Barrier lipids are rebuilt over days, not hours. A single good application changes how hands feel, not how they are.
Remove the cause where you can
Gloves for wet work, lukewarm rather than hot water, and a milder soap where the job allows it.
