Dry hands in winter
Cold air holds less water, indoor heating holds even less, and hands go from one to the other all day. That swing is what cracks them — not the cold by itself.
What winter actually does
Cold outdoor air is dry in absolute terms; heated indoor air is dry in relative terms. Skin loses water to both. Add hot water, soap and wind, and the barrier lipids that normally hold that water in are stripped faster than they are rebuilt.
The routine that works
Cream after every wash
Not at the end of the day. The moment that matters is while hands are still slightly damp.
Heavier at night
A thick balm under cotton gloves overnight does more than three daytime applications.
Gloves outdoors
The cheapest intervention on this list, and the one people skip.
If they are already cracked
Once skin has split, switch from cream to something occlusive — a petroleum jelly-based balm — and keep it on. A crack that is bleeding, hot or spreading is a matter for a doctor, not for cosmetics.
