Balm for dry skin
A balm is not just a thicker cream. It works differently, and for very dry skin that difference is the whole point.
Balm, cream or oil
Balm
Low water content, high in occlusives. Seals the skin and stays put. Best on cracked, chapped or exposed areas.
Cream
An emulsion of water and oil. Lighter, absorbs faster, suits everyday use on larger areas.
Oil
Pure lipids. Excellent after a shower on damp skin, where it traps the water still on the surface.
How to get more out of it
Apply to skin that is still slightly damp. The occlusive layer then traps water that is already there, instead of trying to draw it in from a dry environment. This single habit makes more difference than moving up a price bracket.
When it is not a cosmetic problem
Persistent, itchy, inflamed or weeping skin is a dermatological matter. Cosmetic care supports the barrier; it does not treat a condition.
