How to recognise a good disinfectant
Most of what distinguishes a serious disinfectant from a bottle of scented alcohol is printed on the label. It is just printed in the part nobody reads.
The five things to check
Active substance
Named, not implied. „Antibacterial“ on a front label is marketing; the active and its concentration are information.
Concentration
Alcohol-based products have a working range. Below it, the product does not do the job however long you leave it.
Contact time
The time the surface must stay visibly wet. If the label does not state one, that tells you something.
Notification or registration
For preparations that require it, a reference number exists. Ask for it.
Material compatibility
A product that clouds plastic or corrodes steel will cost more than it saves.
Safety data sheet
Any serious supplier has one and will send it without a fuss.
The usual mistakes in practice
Under-dosing a concentrate, wiping a surface dry before the contact time has elapsed, and disinfecting something that was never cleaned. All three produce a routine that looks correct and does not work.
