Liquid or gel hand sanitiser
Both work. The choice is about how they behave in the ten seconds after they leave the bottle — and that depends on where you are standing.
What they have in common
Efficacy comes from the active and from contact time: the surface has to stay wet for the period the label specifies. Applying too little, or wiping hands dry early, is the most common reason disinfection does not do what the user expects — and it applies to both formats equally.
Where they differ
Liquid
Spreads fast and reaches between fingers and around nails with less effort. Can run off if too much is applied. Good for wall dispensers and high-frequency use.
Gel
Stays where it is put, which makes the dose easy to control and the bottle travel-safe. Needs a little more rubbing to cover fully.
Skin feel
Gels often contain more emollient and feel less drying over a day. Liquids evaporate faster.
Setting
Liquid for fixed stations and volume; gel for pockets, bags and mobile work.
What matters more than the format
Enough product
Roughly a palmful. Short-dosing is the real failure mode.
Rub until dry
Do not wave hands or wipe them on a towel.
Hands must be clean
Disinfection is not cleaning. Visible soiling needs washing first.
